YEAR 2
Welcome to Year 2.
The Year 2 classes and teachers are:
Marigold - Mrs Towsey
Yellow - Miss Ellison
Buttercup - Mr Tomkinson
Our Key Question this half term is:
Should you always stand up for what you believe in?
English: This half term, our English work is based on the book 'The king who banned the dark' by Emily Howarth-Booth. It tells the story of a little prince who was afraid of the dark and decided that when he became king, he would do something about it. Our year 2's have done a great job already in writing sentences and sharing the pros and cons to banning the dark.
Maths: This half term we are focusing on learning the multiplication and division facts for 2, 5 and 10s. We will be using the method grouping and repeated addition to solve tricky multiplication problems. We are also looking at the properties of 2D and 3D shapes.
Reading: In phonics, we will be concentrating on phase 5 sounds: ay, ou, ie, ea, oy and ir, as well as practicing sounds with alternative spellings. We are encouraging children to read regularly. The Getepic website is a great reading resource that all children can access - a range of fiction and non-fiction books are available as well as books with audio that can be played to the children. The children are continuing to practice their comprehension skills based on vocabulary, retrieval, sequencing and inference. Please encourage your child to read regularly and practice their phonics using the following websites:
www.phonicsplay.co.uk username: jan21 password: home
www.getepic (class code is available from class teachers.)
Science: In Science, the children have been learning about living things and their habitats. They have explored different habitats and have thought about the different animals and creatures that would live there. The children have also learnt about micro-habitats - we were really impressed with the children who created one for their garden - what creep crawlies will they find? We are going to learn about food chains and discuss how animals and plants have adapted to live in their environment.
History: We have enjoyed learning about GuyFawkes and the Gunpowder plot. The children learnt why Guy Fawkes and his friends decided to plot against the king and the reason why Bonfire night is celebrated. We will end this half term's history discussing the question: Should you always stand up for what you believe in?
PE: Can the children keep up with Joe Wicks? So far the children have been doing really well and enjoying the sessions.
Homework
Our children work incredibly hard at school, please make sure that you continue to support their learning at home.
Reading: Please ensure that you read with your child at least 3 times a week and that it is signed whenever your child has read.
Spellings: All children are given new spellings related to their Phonics Phase every week. Please ensure that they practice their spellings each day so they are ready for the test on Friday.
Times Tables: We are focusing on the 2, 5 and 10 times tables in Year 2. Your child has a times table book, please can you encourage your child to write them in and practice them every night.
